Charity Drive: Kick The STAAR

Houston Dynamo Community: 59 Economically Underprivileged and At-Risk Local Youth Soccer Players Need YOUR Help!

Dear Houston Dynamo Community,

Do you believe in the law of attraction?

Not even 24-hours after the launch of our Independent Supporters Association, a member of our community was fortuitously approached by a local volunteer coach with an urgent need.

He has a group of 59 hard-working youths who have a soccer tournament this Thursday May 10th. The problem is, they don’t have any uniforms.

These Conroe ISD 5th and 6th graders have faced a lot of adversity in their lives. 100% of them are classified as socio-economically disadvantaged by national standards and on the Federal free lunch program. They’ve also all been identified as “at risk” of dropping out of school without intervention.

With the help of volunteers in the Kick the STAAR program, these youths are rewarded with soccer play at the end of every week for good behavior and completing their schoolwork. With the state-mandated STAAR test soon to be behind them, they are excited to participate in the program’s culmination: an inter-school soccer tournament starting this Thursday.

As stated on item ‘D’ in the Walker End Houston Statement of Purpose, a major initiative of our Independent Supporters Association is to “Give back to the Houston-area community by making charitable donations and sharing soccer with under-privileged youths.” With the Kick The STAAR program we’ve been presented with a perfectly aligned opportunity for this initiative.

We, as a united community of Dynamo fans, supporter group-affiliated and independent alike, are going to outfit those 59 youths for their tournament on Thursday.

Your donation will help contribute to:

  1. 59 Orange, Numbered Tops Branded with ‘Walker End Houston’ on the Front
  2. 59 Pairs of Black Shorts
  3. 59 Pairs of Orange Soccer Socks
  4. 59 Pairs of Shin Guards

Kick the STAAR 5th Grade Class

Goal: Raise $1,500 by Wednesday May 9th, 11:59PM

How we’re going to do it

Discounted manufacturing for orange numbered tops, plus black shorts, orange socks, and shin guards have been lined up through a combination of local retailer Soccer4All and some of the big businesses (Walmart, Academy) to satisfy the urgency of the project.

At the Meet the Team event on Saturday, we received a generous $250 charity donation from a member of our community pledged prior to knowledge of this opportunity. As of this morning, that $250 has been applied in full to the downpayment on the gear.

Now we need your help.
